RAPID KL – Optimisation (Corporate Finance Advisory and Strategy, 2005)

We conducted an optimisation study of RAPID KL’s depot plans to propose the best depot configuration for RAPID in terms of capital costs, operating costs, management flexibility and efficient bus deployment.

The expansion of RAPID’s bus fleet, as well as the re-configuration of its bus network resulted in a very large complex problem that was approached using a mixed-integer linear programming method. In order to extract accurate data for the purpose of the model, a GIS-based transportation planning program TransCAD, was used to generate a large comprehensive origin destination matrix of shortest paths, which, to the extent possible, took into account the actual road network within the Greater Klang Valley including one-way streets and turning restrictions.

To test the robustness of the model, multiple sensitivity scenarios were examined to ensure that the solution proposed would be robust and applicable for RAPID in the longer term.
